I don't think it was for the sake of humor, because the reporter wasn't laughing himself. I guess Tom started to ask him why he'd do that after he laughed himself and noticed it wasn't an accident or joke, when the reporter didn't laugh himself, it was out of sheer disrespect and probably he wanted to get a certain reaction from Tom, so they'd have some 'crazy footage' of him again to ruin his reputation furthermore.
