Music Styles and Genres

The twentieth century saw an exploding plethora of musical styles and genres. Totally new forms of music appeared, such as big band jazz in the 1920s, 30s-40s. Related to jazz was the improvised blues founded in the negro slave experience, then much later, rhythm and blues. Pop music really became popularized just after the second world war and in the 1950s it merged with rock and roll which later developed into hard and soft rock music. The hippy era of love and peace in the 1960s had its own musical styles with a strong poetic protest movement starring bob Dylan - followed by the innovative 1970s with expert rock groups such as Santana, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin and the remarkable Elton John and Billy Joel, both solo performers and songwriters. This was also the disco era of The Bee Gees, Abba and Olivia Newton John. Motown happened from the 1960s. There was Stevie Wonder and The Jackson Five, featuring Michael Jackson.

What is your favorite music? Your first choice? Is it funk, grunge, rap or hip hop? Rap seemed to emerge in the 1990s from the streets of Los Angeles. Hip hop is more 21st century and based on street dancing.

Classical music has endured since medieval times and for some eastern cultures it originated many thousands of years ago; for example the Chinese violin and the Indian sitar and other instruments of Asian music. Spanish guitar music greatly influenced modern western folk music and every culture since the dawn of time has had its own version of folk, people’s music, melodies, chants, children’s songs and baby pacifying music.

As you can see, I’m quite a music freak. I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s so they probably had the greatest musical impact and influence on me.
